KUALA LUMPUR, September 2 – The federal government today announced a ceiling price of RM 19.90 for Covid-19 self-test kits in retail stores starting September 5.

It also capped the wholesale price of the kits at RM16.

“The demand for rapid test kits is expected to increase following increased public awareness of self-assessment to ensure they are not infected.

“The wholesale and retail ceiling price for Covid-19 Antigen Rapid Test Kits (Self-test) is determined on the basis of suitability and suitability for more efficient application to ensure reasonable prices and the availability of supplies in the market for the benefit of consumers and traders, ”Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and Minister of Internal Trade and Consumer Affairs Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said in a joint statement.

Nanta said the decision was based on information gathered from price observations at all pharmacies across the country and comments obtained from the Health Ministry’s Medical Devices Authority, Customs Department and discussions with the sellers and the importer.

He added that his ministry expects competition to further stabilize selling prices, similar to current face mask prices.

He warned traders that tough action will be taken against those who flout the new regulations under the Price Control and Anti-Profit Law.

Those found guilty can be punished with a fine of up to RM 100,000, or jailed for up to three years, or both for the first offense.

Repeat offenders can be fined up to RM250,000, or jailed for up to five years, or both on conviction.

Legal persons can be fined up to RM 500,000 for the first offense and RM 1 million for subsequent offenses.
